This year the Taxcon theme is “Harnessing Change.”

As technological changes and other changes driven by natural disasters such as pandemics, continue to drive innovation and create opportunities, knowing what is changing, how and why is the first step in planning to harness such change to create a sustainable business and a sustainable world.

This year the TaxCon theme is “Harnessing Change.” The conference will be hosted as a webcast as previously done last year and will delve into various change trends in a number of sectors and the tax implications thereof. The conference will identify the key players that have contributed to innovative change and have them unpack and provide insights into what drove this change and also where tax fits in with the change.

Change can be daunting but when harnessed it can provide exciting opportunities. Changes in, for instance, our economy and business environment all drive innovation and create opportunities, new non-traditional career paths, business models, organisational forms and new sources of income. However, you cannot harness this change to create a sustainable business and better yet, a sustainable world, if you do not understand it and how it impacts the “traditional world”.

Join SAICA’s host Ayanda Thabethe and avatar co-host iYanda who, together with our trend makers, delve into change trends in several sectors and how they resulted in new business opportunities and thereafter when and how tax was considered.  Our speakers will share how they harnessed change, in small and large businesses, as they provide insights into what drove this change and, most importantly, where tax fits in and the incidence of tax to such change trend. Our panel of tax experts will then analyse these innovative change trends from both a domestic and international tax perspective and how some of these trends have traditional and some have new tax considerations.

Rose Tuyeni Peter

Rose Tuyeni Peter is an economist with a deep interest in researching health systems and how they can be improved to deliver better and more equitable health outcomes. Rose joined Percept after previously working in financial inclusion and financial sector development. She holds an MSc in Health Economics and Decision Science from UCL and an MComm in Applied Economics from UCT.

Dominic White

Dominic White is the ethical hacking director of Orange Cyberdefense, and MD of Orange Cyberdefense South Africa. He was CTO at SensePost, a 21-year-old South African-born information security consultancy, specialising in ethical hacking which was acquired by Orange Cyberdefense in 2019. He was previously a manager within the Security & Privacy Services division of Deloitte and holds an MSc from Rhodes University in the topic of computer security.

Lebo Kambule

Lebo Kambule is the founder of The Avatar Company, a marketing and virtual influencer management agency based in Johannesburg South Africa. Launched in 2018, The Avatar Company has created virtual humans that tell stories about themselves through social media. They live ordinary lives and experience what we ordinarily would experience in real life, but through the lens of a mobile phone. Lebo is also co-founder and creator of South Africa’s 1st virtual influencer, Kim Zulu. Lebo conceptualized and developed Kim Zulu in 2018 but then introduced her to the world in March of 2020 on Instagram, this then led to joining forces with Emoji Digital to further explore her possibilities around her existence.

Ayanda Thabethe

Ayanda Thabethe is a seasoned MC that has mastered the art of adapting to each organisations needs ensuring that every event she partakes in is a memorable experience. She is one of South Africa’s most followed media personalities on social media which has led her to share her voice to powerful influencer and ambassadorship campaigns which vary from social impact to lifestyle. Her pillars include but are not limited to beauty, fashion, wellness and fitness, women empowerment, travel and lifestyle. On screen Ayanda has shared the spotlight on the biggest productions in South African entertainment including South Africa’s longest running magazine show-Top Billing and is currently the newest face of Internationally acclaimed E! Entertainment as an anchor for E! Africa. Off screen Ayanda has a strong passion for education especially that of young girls which has given rise to her initiative , ‘A Beautiful Mind’ which enables students from all over the continent to make the right career choice through gathering minds and expertise from various industries to speak about their journeys in their respective careers.’

Mufaro Chiwara

Mufaro Chiwara is Consultant at Percept who works on a wide range of health sector projects and problems. He has spent much of his time in the past year co-researching and understanding the telemedicine market in South Africa. Mufaro has an educational background in Actuarial Science and in Entrepreneurship, both from UCT.

Darren Langbein

Darren has been an entrepreneur for the past 10 years in the property and financial industries. He has extensive experience in management roles and has recently transitioned into the 4th Industrial Revolution, which he finds fascinating and exciting. Since 2017 he has launched three new start-ups in the telecommunications, investment and non-profit sectors. His passion for making a difference in people’s lives is what drives the type of projects he takes on. Darren is a great people’s person and has an ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.

Dr Sharon Smulders

Sharon is primarily responsible for tax advocacy at SAICA which includes the development of tax legislation in South Africa by commenting on proposed legislation. She engages with the media and various stakeholders in this regard including the Tax Ombud, SARS, National Treasury, Parliament and other international organisations such as the OECD. She is also responsible for the various tax technical committees at SAICA which include the Transfer Pricing, VAT, Employees’ Tax, Carbon Tax and the Exchange Control Committees.

Previously, she was an Associate Professor in the Financial Intelligence Department at UNISA, Head of Tax Technical & Research at the South African Institute of Tax Professionals (SAIT), an Associate Professor in Taxation at the University of Pretoria and a manager at Deloitte.

Pieter Faber

Pieter is a recognised specialist in tax with a specific focus on tax policy and tax administrative law. He joined SAICA in 2015 and assumes responsibility for member support in tax in the fields of legislative and tax operations. This includes tax advocacy on behalf of the profession in collaboration with the National Tax Committee, including in the media, and engagement with various stakeholders including the Tax Ombud, SARS, National Treasury and Parliament.

Pieter has more than 15 years’ experience in tax law and policy, having extensively consulted in employees’ tax, income tax, tax administration matters and tax disputes. Before Pieter joined SAICA, he consulted on tax for 10 years at a Big 4 firm after which he was the Technical Executive for the SA Institute of Tax Professionals. In addition to his Postgraduate Certificate in Advanced Taxation, Pieter holds master’s degrees in law (LLM Import & Export Law) and commerce (MCom International Tax).

Leon Oosthuizen

Leon is a Tax Director at EY and has specialized in VAT over the last 28 years going back to 1990, the year before the inception of VAT in South Africa. Leon possesses extensive experience in Financial Services but has through the years been involved in all sectors. Furthermore, Leon was also involved with the inception of VAT in Tanzania, Namibia and Botswana.

Mike Benetello

Mike is a Partner in Bowmans’ Tax department. He specialises in corporate and international tax, mining tax, M&A tax, transfer pricing and tax compliance. He has acted for clients in a variety of industries including energy, mining and minerals, agriculture, construction, private equity, telecommunications, retail and pharmaceuticals. Mike has provided clients across Africa with strategic solutions on matters relating to transaction structuring, private equity, tax dispute resolution, corporate restructuring and black economic empowerment transactions. He has authored a number of chapters and articles for publications including Lexis Nexis’ Silke on International Tax and Juta’s Income Tax, and has lectured for the University of Johannesburg’s MCom tax module. Mike is a previous chairperson for SAICA’s National Tax Committee.

Prof Osman Mollagee

Osman has specialised in tax for 28 years, primarily in the corporate and international tax environment.  He is a Tax Partner at EY South Africa, serving multinational groups across several industries and sectors, across multiple tax areas.  Osman is also an extra-ordinary Associate Professor at the University of the Western Cape, and a past Chair of SAICA’s National Tax Committee.
